Percy Jackson Codex

Riptide (Anaklusmos)

A celestial blade hidden within a common ballpoint pen.

Riptide (Greek: Ἀνάκλυσμος, *Anaklusmos*, meaning "The Surge") is Percy Jackson’s signature celestial bronze sword. Unlike traditional weapons, the blade collapses into the guise of a blue ballpoint pen, allowing the demigod to carry it through mundane spaces undetected by mortals. While the Mist disguises its true form from non-magical eyes, the weapon retains its lethal edge against monsters, reducing them to golden dust upon defeat. More than a tool of war, Riptide represents Percy’s dual existence: an ordinary student and a hero of Olympus.

Lore & Background

The name *Anaklusmos* was bestowed upon the blade by Chiron during Percy’s first summer at Camp Half-Blood. Before this revelation, it existed merely as a strange pen recovered from Medusa’s garden shop. Celestial bronze does not rust or shatter; it is forged specifically to harm immortals and monsters alike. The weapon resonates uniquely with Percy Jackson due to their shared lineage with Poseidon, though its history predates his ownership.

In Their Own Story

Rain slicked the asphalt as Percy clicked the blue pen. A soft metallic snick echoed in the alleyway, the sound swallowed by the distant traffic. In his hand, the plastic casing vanished, replaced by the familiar weight of bronze. He didn't need to look down; he knew the blade was there, humming with a faint warmth against his palm. The shadows ahead shifted, revealing eyes that glowed like embers in the dark. Percy tightened his grip, the pen cap tucked safely into his pocket where it belonged when not needed. He stepped forward, the rain sizzling as it touched the celestial metal.

Reader's Guide

To deploy the blade, the user clicks the cap; the transformation is instantaneous and silent. If separated from its owner—dropped, lost, or thrown—the weapon magically returns to their pocket within seconds. The pen cap is critical: without it secured, the blade cannot retract and remains exposed permanently. While celestial bronze feels like heavy steel in combat, mortals perceive only a harmless writing instrument due to divine mist manipulation. It does not harm humans unless commanded otherwise.
